Council tax

Why should the elderly like Richard Fitzmaurice be sent to prison for refusing to pay council tax when the elderly cannot afford it. Surely there is another way other than taxing 10.4 million pensioners into poverty?

Wouldn’t a local sales tax be much better in funding local services? Or an even better idea would be to allow the local councils to think up ideas on how to raise taxes. If they want to raise tax the young and leave the elderly or vice versa why not let them? If they want a flat income tax why not let them?

Whenever there is a discussion about local taxation, the liberals always bang on about how they want to make it "fairer", but their idea of "fairness" always involves taxing those who appear to have the most money. Hence the idea of basing it on house value - forgetting the fact that pensioners are likely to be towards the top of the housing ladder and have the more valuable properties - but not the cash to pay for the taxation.

Council tax in England has gone up by 121% on average, since first introduced in 1993. See

I don't think our area is any exception. We certainly haven't seen services increase by that amount - I suppose a lot of the increase is on increasing salaries for council admin employees.

Vernon Coleman's book on the EU includes a lengthy section on taxation.

Basically politicians and their bureaucratic hangers-on are motivated by greed and therefore ripping off the ordinary Brit, Joe Public.

It doesn't matter whether or not he is a pensioner.

With this kind of avaricious, incompetent amoral cabal notionally in charge, we don't need the EU or multi-culti-ism etc.

Blair, Brown, Cameron, Ming-Campbell and co, plus the Civil Service are quite capable of finishing off Britainistan without outside help - although they enthusiastically aid and abet it, being good Marxists.

Something does have to be done but taxing those that can't pay ios scandalous.

Certainly is

'Scandal' doesn't bother anyone in power these days, though - unless they're forced to resign.

But if they are like 'Two Jags,' they can keep the money, the perks and the job title while passing on the responsibility to someone else.

Thank you for the hat tip, I belive his family have clubbed together and paid his bill, he is now back home.
Again, he has highlighted a system that needs a thorough review, paying council tax bills is an incredible worry for many on poverty line who are perhaps exempt from credits.
