Prisoner sues for failed suicide bid and wins

THE Prison Service was accused of a cover-up yesterday as it maintained a veil of silence over a massive compensation payout to a suicidal inmate.

It has repeatedly refused to give details of the incident that led to a £575,000 out-of-court settlement to a young prisoner at Northallerton Young Offenders' Institution.

The Northern Echo exclusively reported how the payout was made after the unknown prisoner, aged between 18 and 21, attempted to take his own life and was saved by prison officers. It is believed that his claim centred on an alleged breach of human rights.

Next time this happens we should let the person die. We should not be paying hundreds of thousands of pounds for saving someone’s life. It is utterly ridiculous. We should give him the death penalty if he wants to die that much.

But why did he try to commit suicide? Let's say for example he was in for shoplifting and then got beaten up by prison guards and humuiliated by them- say he had to strip in front of the prison. I can understand him then feeling so bad he wanted to commit suicide but later having the grounds for a human rights prosecution. I think we need to know more about the case before we actually say he was definitely in teh wrong.

Lesson: don't commit crime and you won't be humiliated by prison guards

The authorities are in the wrong for rewarding the crime of attempted suicide.

Alanorei attempted suicide isn't a crime- give me the statute which makes it a crime.

Youdon'tknowme all I'm saying is that we don't know why he was in there- lets wait for the details before we judge and just because you've committed a crime doesn't mean you lose all your rights.

As far as I am concerned onc you commit a crime you forfeit all your rights.

It once was, until 1961, when Britain was saner than it is now, though rarely punished, evidently.

See http://www.humanism.org.uk/
site/cms/contentviewarticle.asp?article=1240

But that is not the essential point.

The essential point is that attempted suicide should not be rewarded.

Nor should any kind of irresponsible behaviour be rewarded, whether illegal or not.

Why not give £500,000+ to Henry Webster and his family, or the family of the late L/Cpl Matthew Ford, 45 RM Cdo?

Or the families of all our servicemen and women who have become casualties in Blair's illegal foreign wars?

They are much more deserving individuals than prison inmates of any description, who don't deserve anything, as YDKM rightly says.

If Britain withdrew from the EU and ended the failed multiculti experiment, it would help considerably in obtaining the necessary funds, possibly by as much as £95,000,000,000 a year.

Alanorei- saying that those guys haven't been treated well doesn't mean that this guy doesn't have a case as well. All that I am saying is that we don't know about what his case is so speculating about what could be going on- is a bit redundant. I understand you if you object to him suing the prison service over his suicide- but do we know whether it was his suicide or the events leading up to his suicide.

Attempted suicide should be a crime? Why? What's your case for that?

As for expelling ethnic minorities from this country- well there aren't many of us who aren't immigrants in the beggining here, and ethnic minorities contribute a vast ammount to the UK economy- I speak as a white person who was taught by a Croatian at university and one of whose best friends and most intellectually influential friends upon me is a Bangladeshi muslim- I'd never have appreciated Milton had she not taught me how to. That's just me but there are thousands like me- I think migration has brought much to the economy.

Youdon'tknowme- people who commit crimes lose all their rights- does that apply to all crimes or just some- does it for instance apply to speeding tickets or speeding fines? When does it stop- does someone lose all their rights for their period of time in jail or do they stay lost until they're 85 when the crime they committed was a shoplifting at the age of 15. I agree with you taht locking someone up for life is neccessary for some crimes but equally do those people lose all their rights- by what argument do people have rights to begin with and given that argument how can they lose all of them by being locked up!

but do we know whether it was his suicide or the events leading up to his suicide.

Why does that matter? if he doesn't want to be bullied in prison he should never have committed a crime.

does it for instance apply to speeding tickets or speeding fines?

It applies to all crimes where there is a physical victim.

does someone lose all their rights for their period of time in jail or do they stay lost until they're 85 when the crime they committed was a shoplifting at the age of 15

It applies while they are in prison and for a limited period after they have left prison.

As a deterrent. Some folk need to be protected from themselves, regrettably.

"As for expelling ethnic minorities from this country- well there aren't many of us who aren't immigrants in the beggining here."

Disagreed. Britain's racial identity was stablised after the Norman conquest and even then, the native Celts, Anglo-Saxons, Viking descendants and Normans (North-men) were all essentially the same race (Nordic Caucasian) and assimilable with each other.

The immigration of the 1950s onwards has introduced large numbers of non-assimilable minorities, as inspection of many areas in major cities will show, such as London, often called Londonistan nowadays and those of West Yorkshire and the West Midlands.

"and ethnic minorities contribute a vast ammount to the UK economy-."

On the contrary, immigration and multiculturalism as a whole costs this country £55,000,000,000 a year - net, or about 5% of GDP.

Much of this is in lost GDP. Ethnic minorities contribute only 50% of GDP in proportion to their relative population size. The examples you quote are no doubt valid but consist of exceptions that prove the rule.

Forfeit all your rights? What if you were framed? Hope it never happens to you.

That rarely happens and if it did you have a retrial. if you are still found guilty its tough but like I said it rarely happens.
