A solution to waste disposal

The growing reliance of town halls on private contractors is illustrated starkly by the problem of coping with more and more rubbish while trying to meet ambitious EU targets to cut landfill waste.

Waste disposal is one of the biggest council expenses. Local authorities in England alone manage about 30 million tonnes of waste every year, at a cost of £3 billion. The volume of waste has been increasing by about 3 per cent year on year.

The cost of cutting back on landfill waste is now a prime factor in council tax increases and will contribute to next year’s inflation-busting rise.

I have a solution and it again involves foreign countries. Why don’t we just pay foreign countries in Africa or other poor areas to take our rubbish? If it costs us £3 billion we can pay poor countries £1 billion for every 30 million tonnes. Council tax bills for waste are then slashed by two thirds saving the country money which can be spent in other areas. The environment is then much better and we have more room for housing

Poor countries could then earn money instead of having us give it to them in aid which never works anyway. This would also employ people in Africa. I don’t know how many but it would be many thousands probably. This would mean that they could try and work themselves out of poverty.

In the end everyone wins because everyone gets something out of it. We also don’t have to give it all to one country. We could spread it around Africa.

Yep, spread our rubbish around Africa.

Are you trying to win friends?

that wasn't the idea...

seriously if we can pay them to do it why shouldn't we? the average african country is probably twice the size of the UK so they have plenty of places to put it. They then gain £1 billion which they can invest in areas like healthcare and education. This will also create jobs which will stimulate their economy.

Another strategy is incineration, provided it can be done efficiently.

That way, the combustible part of the waste can be re-used to help generate electricity.

The main problem is the 'Chicken Little' politics of CO2 emissions, another nation-wrecking piece of subversion, this time from the environmentalists.

Why not? They spread enough of their rubbish around the world in the form of savages, come and live in Lambeth for a while and see how 'Afro friendly' you end up!

Are you trying to win friends?

Are you trying to impress Trevor Phillips?

Jeez, you sound like Bono! Drop the trendy 'I care about Africa' pretence or go and live there.

unlike liberals I actually care about Africa. I want them to succeed and I realise that they will never succeed the way the situation is now. Aid is actually hurting them and taking their skilled immigrants is also hurting them.

I guess you would call me a liberal, but I don't disagree with this analysis. Aid is inefficient, and props up bad rulers. At one stage, there were more Malawian doctors in Manchester than in Malawi.

Onyx Stone has a point, though. Proposing that Africa takes our rubbish and our prisoners doesn't immediately or obviously suggest concern for the continent, without a careful explanation of the reasoning behind it. I can see why eyebrows might get raised.

Happy New Year to you and all your readers, yes, even BFB.

I never said I disagreed with the idea. I just highlighted a drawback - That it has a exploitive and patronising feel about it. I was also needling the author, (I expect youdontknowme likes a little banter).

An interesting note to Ian is that Britain once before exported their convicts. It was not such a bad experiment either. They made a go of it, build a great new nation, and thrashed the world in cricket!

Recently the Aussie prime minister suggested that Australia might be well placed to dispose of the world's radioactive waste. The waste itself is relatively small, and Australia is geologically stable, and comparitively empty. He didn't make many friends at home for suggesting it. But the suggestion has merit.

It would be environmentally unfriendly to do this, and not acceptable to dump our rubbish elsewhere. We should regard rubbish as a resource instead, there is value in muck.

Have a Happy New Year.

Instead of actually giving them money we make them earn the money so even if most of the money does go into the pockets of dictators some of the money will have to go into creating jobs because they will need more prison officers. It might only create prison officer jobs but it's better than having dictators spending it on themselves.

Happy new year to you too Ian and happy new year to everyone else.
