The wonders of EU democracy

Ah… the wonders of EU
democracy never cease to amaze me. In a normal free world when more people vote against a proposal it means that the proposal does not go ahead. It doesn’t mean that same in the world of the EU though.

The topic was tariffs on foreign goods, more specifically Chinese and Vietnamese goods. Nine countries voted in favour of it and 12 voted AGAINST it with 4 abstaining. Under EU law abstentions are now counted in favour of the proposal as they do not oppose it. The fact that abstentions do not support the proposal is lost on the EU who don’t actually know what democracy is.

Most people (me included) support tariffs on foreign goods but that is not the point. The point is the EU wilfully ignores democracy if things don’t go their way.
