Cherie Blair to fight the smoking ban

Atleast Cherie Blair is good for something and that is undoing what her husband has done. She is going to try and help a nightclub boss overturn the smoking ban when it comes into force in July. They are even thinking of taking it all the way to the European Court.

I don’t smoke but I believe that it is no business of the government where people smoke. It should be up to the owners of the pubs and clubs. If they want people to stop smoking they can ban it on their property.

If there was a serious demand for none smoking bars then that demand would have been met already. It hasn’t which says something about the demand for it.

I agree with you on this, passionately.

Partly just because it is an appalling infringement of liberty.

Partly because I'm a twenty a day somker. Whilst I can walk outside the pub for a fag, I can't do this in a nightclub.

I agree. There are some things that the government should not be involved in. What happens on private property is included.

My dad is a smoker and smokes about 20 per day too. Been smoking since he was 8 (blame his grandad for starting him) and he is 56 now. I believe he should stop especially seeing as he had a stroke because of it about 9 years ago and can no longer work. I am not going to make him stop though. It should be up to him. It is none of my business and certainly none of the governments.

My local (where I am going in five) is used by 80% smokers. It's a working man's football pub where everyone knows eachother.

If you don't like smoke, you don't go there.
I have known several girls who I have suggested meeting there to, and they have said no, because it's so smoky.

So non-smokers know to avoid it, if it bothers them.

It's a very busy pub with good takings.

That says a lot.

The ban is not about public health, it is a class-war assault on what Marxists see as Capitalist corporations making money. And why shouldn't they? If grown adults chose to smoke it is entirely up to them.

They banned fox hunting for the same reason. If they were concerned for the rights of animals they would ban Halal slaughter.

They only banned fox hunting because it is percieved as a persuit of the upper-classes and the wealthy.

Labour are obsessed with class-war, it is there raison d,etre.

I agree with bfb.

I don't smoke, I don't like the smokey atmosphere in pubs at branch meetings and the threat that smoking poses to health is well established.

(I understand that tobacco leaves are an excellent rat poison and that a fly won't land on spat out tobacco juice - though as we all know, it will land on a lot of other things.)

That said, this is one more attack on what is perceived as part of British life and more evidence of increasing state control.
